How Can Returnee Christians Maintain Healthy Devotional Habits After Returning Home

By Sean C.

After returning to China, returnee Christians are bound to go through a period of transition and adjustment when they feel lonely and depressed. Even after this stage, they will still face stresses from work, family, and life. It is very important for them to maintain a close relationship with the Lord. One of the most important aspects “abiding in Christ” is spiritual disciplines, especially regular devotions. However, in this internet age, it is also most difficult and challenging to set aside time every day for quiet time with the Lord. The following are some practical suggestions from our co-workers on how to keep up with spiritual disciplines after returning to China:

Do Not Stop Devotions

  • Establish a regular time for prayer and Bible reading: No matter how busy you are, set aside a certain amount of time every day for prayer. You can choose morning or evening and keep it regular. If you are reading the Bible as part of a devotional, it is best to use a paper Bible, as reading the Bible on a cell phone or tablet can easily distract and ensnare you.
  • Use a prayer list: Make a list of people and things you need to pray for and update it regularly. This will help you to pray in a more organized way.
  • Participate in a prayer group: If your church has a prayer group, try to get involved. Praying with other believers can strengthen your faith and power.

Join a Fellowship

  • Find a suitable church: One needs to be persistent in one’s devotions, but we also need brothers and sisters in the Lord to support and encourage each other in our spiritual walk. After returning to China, find a suitable church or fellowship (including returnee fellowships) and participate in Sunday services and fellowship activities. It is best to find a suitable church for you through the recommendation of your church or organization co-workers.
  • Active participation in fellowship: Join a church fellowship group and participate in Bible study, sharing and ministry. Fellowship is an important way for you to grow spiritually, build deep relationships with other Christians, and support each other and grow together.

Share the Gospel

  • Prepare your testimony: Prepare your testimony to tell a concise story about how you came to faith in Christ and how you have been changed since you became a Christian. A testimony is a powerful tool for sharing the Gospel.
  • Take advantage of everyday opportunities: Look for opportunities in your daily life to share the Gospel with friends, coworkers, and family. This can be done by caring for them and sharing your faith experiences to help them with their struggles in life.

Other Suggestions

  • Keep in touch with overseas believers: Even if you have returned to your home country, you can keep in touch with your brothers and sisters overseas through the internet to encourage and pray for each other.
  • Read and study: Continue to read faith-related books to keep learning and growing. Attend some Christian training programs or conferences to improve your spiritual knowledge and abilities.
  • Seek a spiritual mentor: If possible, find an experienced spiritual mentor and communicate with him/her regularly for guidance and advice.

We hope these suggestions on how to keep up your devotions will help you to continue to persevere in your faith, actively participate in church life, and boldly share the Gospel after you return to your home country.
